NARROWBOAT DAY HIRE ROUTES FROM BIRMINGHAM
Route 1
Into Birmingham
Upon leaving Lyons Boatyard you can pass through a 250metre long tunnel on a three hour cruise that will get you in the heart of Birmingham. The quaint “Canalside” pub in Gas street basin serves an excellent Ale on your way to the newly developed Broad Street, the “NIA”, and the “Mailbox”. Set off at a comfortable time and retrace your route back past the spectacular buildings of the University of Birmingham, the New Queen Elizabeth Hospital towering over the City and Cadbury World at Bournville.
Route 2
Worcestershire Countryside
Head North again onto the Worcester & Birmingham Canal towards Tardebigge. Shortly after Kings Norton junction you will enter the Wasthills Tunnel which is 2,493 metres long and takes approximately 35-45 minutes to complete. It’s absolutely fascinating to consider the workmanship that went into building this tunnel and is one of the longest on the network! On approaching the end you will find the Hopwood Inn pub which has a very good menu at a very reasonable price. The journey to here takes around 2 3/4 hours so lunch here and a relaxing, gentle cruise back to base. A Perfect wind down!
Route 3
The Stratford Canal
South towards Earlswood along this tranquil stretch of canal through steep, tree lined embankments to the drawbridge where you will need your BW key (provided) to reach the Drawbridge pub on the other side which serves pub grub and is reasonably priced. Or you can carry on as there is still plenty of time! You are now in the “really pretty” countryside of the South West Midlands where you can continue on for a couple of hours to The Blue Bell (Ciderhouse) Pub at Earlswood.
We will provide you with all the information you need including full instruction, a contact telephone number for any questions you might want to ask while you are cruising and lots of advice on where to turn, where to moor etc. We are here to help you enjoy your day and hopefully you will come back again!!
